Framing walls

Framing is the first step to build our house, it is the skeleton that will hold the rest of the components that make up the house such as windows, doors, drywalls, even the roof. Maybe you are remodeling or buying a house in that case it is necessary to know the basics of building a house.

A key element is the Foundation because it does not matter how good materials have been used in the framing if the foundations are not properly installed. Generally the foundation may be made of stone, brick, concrete block, or poured concrete. But the most used material for foundations is concrete.

A building is framed in sections and the sections joined together. The most common framing material is wood, now metal framing is becoming more popular. Ask for the local building regulations before making a decision.

To framing the walls of our house is important to follow this basic steps:

  1. Determine the height of your walls. The standard wall height in many homes is 8 feet; lumber yards sell dimensional lumber cut 92-5/8-inches long. These boards are STUDS and, when nailed to a bottom and a top plate, you will have a wall that is 8 feet high after drywall is hung.

  2. Choose studs that are as straight as possible. Curved studs are useless. Look the studs over and reject those with large knots, which weaken the integrity of the wood.

  3. Determine where your bottom wall plate will go and make a chalk line in the floor leaving a pattern for future wall placement.
